About Soong Hi

Although Pat Li gets a credit, her character Soong Hi only appears briefly in one scene and she has no lines at all.

Hawkeye and Trapper are conducting physicals on Korean women which U.S. Army personnel wish to marry. Private Danny McShane, a corpsman at the 4077th, brings in his fiancee, Soong Hi. Hawkeye and Trapper are somewhat taken aback as they have seen her before, at Rosie's Bar, where, according to Hawkeye, "She's been on that same stool through two wars, with a change maker in her purse." McShane insists that she is only 21, but the doctors know better and tell him that "her mascara's older than that". The doctors convince McShane to have a cooling off period and a rethink. McShane finally agrees, but only for two weeks.

Hawkeye's and Trapper's action proves to be unpopular with the enlisted personnel at the 4077th. Both Radar and Zale think that McShane should be allowed to marry whoever he wants and it is none of the doctors' business. However, the doctors soon find out that the whole marriage plan is a scam. Dr. Pak, a local quack doctor, visits the Swamp and tries to bribe Hawkeye and Trapper to clear Soong Hi's physical. Dr Pak explains that one of his rackets is acting as a marriage broker--he arranges marriages between G.I.s and local girls. These girls then go to the United States where they work for some friends of his as prostitutes. Pak tells Hawkeye and Trapper that he would have offered them more money, but McShane had already wanted $1000 as his cut for helping in the scam.

Trapper confronts McShane about the scam but McShane is unrepentant. Why can't he make some money when everyone is doing it? Fortunately, Radar brings in an x-ray which shows that Soong Hi has tuberculosis, so the marriage is off.
