Sergeant Hacker was a minor character who appeared in the Season 6 episode of the CBS-TV series M*A*S*H titled The Light That Failed. The part of Hacker was played by veteran character actor Philip Baker Hall.
At the beginning of the episode "The Light That Failed", supplies are running low at the 4077th--gel foam, sutures, winter clothing, even light bulbs are becoming scarce. When Hacker, who works for HQ, arrives, and the supply truck carries nothing but useless items--salt tablets, an ice cream churn, insect repellent, and the like, Potter is fuming, asking, Who's the ignoramus who's reponsible for all of this? When Potter, upset that the supplies meant for his unit went elsewhere -- a unit in Guam, and that the 4077th is stuck with summer supplies -- poses the question to Hacker, "Did'nt you wonder why you were shipping mosquito netting to a MASH unit in Korea in the dead of winter!??" Hacker replies, "I used to, but it kept me up at nights, and I began to have worry lines, so I cut it out!" When Potter responds, "Wise man!", he then tells Potter to "look on the bright side!" When Potter responds, "There's a bright side to all of this?!?" Hacker wryly responds, "Summer is just six months away!!"
