Oldham's rank is not mentioned nor his branch of service but it is presumed that he is a private. He tells the doctors and Klinger that he is in demolition which suggests that he is a combat engineer. At the beginning of the episode, Hawkeye and B.J. make their rounds and visit Oldham. Klinger comes in and tells Oldham he is ready to ship out and hands him a wallet and a spool of yellow cord. Oldham keeps the wallet and tells Klinger he can have the spool. At first Klinger is glad to have some of the twine but then Oldham tells him the spool is actually Primacord (a kind of detonating cord - used for setting a fuse and detonating high explosives). Klinger and the doctors are nervous but Oldham tells them it is safe--it needs to be set off with something else such as a blasting cap or a grenade.
