About Mr. ShinEdit
The MASH is having difficulty performing vascular transplants (first shown to them by Dr. Anthony Borelli during the episode "The Consultant") because they lack clamps of the correct size for the job. All their efforts to make a suitable clamp fail. Hawkeye and B.J. try to make one themselves, Zale tries to make one, and they even try to enlist the help of some combat engineers. All to no avail.
Meanwhile Klinger has accidentally thrown away Margaret's wedding ring. Margaret is terribly upset and is driving everybody crazy.
Then Hawkeye and B.J. spot Mr. Shin's pushcart in the camp. He is a tinker and metal craftsman and has come to sell all kinds of trinkets which he has made. The doctors decide that they can solve at least one of their two problems and ask him if he can make a gold ring like Margaret's. It turns out Shin has nine of the same kind--it is made cheap by someone in Tokyo. He charges the doctors $25 for it. Hawkeye and B.J. ask for an inscription, the same as what Margaret had on her original: "Over hill, over dale, our love will never fail." Shin doesn't think much of the words but agrees to do it.
The doctors are shown more of Shin's products and they get an idea: can he make a vascular clamp? Shin says he can, for $10. Only $10? Hawkeye and B.J. can't believe the low price. Shin tells them anyone who buys that rather tasteless ring deserves a break.
Shin's ring is delivered and Klinger presents it to Margaret. Margaret is happy at first but then she sees that the inscription says "Over hill, over dale, our love will ever fail." She gets even more upset when she learns from Klinger that Hawkeye and B.J. got her the ring. She accuses them of trying to play a joke on her but Klinger reproaches her gently, saying that they were only trying to help. Couldn't she at least appreciate the effort? Margaret calms down and later tells Hawkeye she knows the ring is a copy but she likes it a lot better than the original.
Meanwhile Shin's $10 clamp works beautifully and the doctors proudly show it to the first patient to benefit from it. They look closely at the clamp and find that Shin has added an inscription: "Over hill, over dale, Korean clamp will never fail!"
