Lieutenant Martinson was a character who appeared in the Season 6 episode of the CBS-TV series M*A*S*H, in the episode titled "What's Up, Doc?". The part of Martinson is played by actor Charles Frank, who also appeared as Captain Hathaway, an Air Force bomber pilot, in the Season 5 episode titled "Dear Sigmund".
Martinson, a shell-shocked platoon officer who's a patient of B.J.'s, becomes furious over the idea of being sent back into battle. Because of his education, he was made an automatic Lieutenant, put in charge of other men. When some of them were killed due to his lack of experience, he flat out refuses to go back into combat. B.J. tries to console him, but Martinson will accept nothing less than being relieved of his command. Winchester tries to relate to him, Ivy Leaguer (Charles graduated from Harvard Medical School) to Ivy Leaguer (Martinson attend Yale), but that doesn't work, either. Martinson then pulls a gun and takes Winchester hostage, demanding a chopper home.
The stand-off crosses over into the O.R., where Hawkeye and Margaret have finished an operation on Fluffy, a pet rabbit of Radar's, which they were using to perform a pregnancy test for her. But Martinson demands they all leave at once. Klinger, upon hearing that Martinson wants a flight back to Ohio, which is both he and Klinger's home state, volunteers to replace Winchester as a hostage.
Instead of being scared, Klinger is downright gung-ho about their prospects, but Martinson, weak from his wound and a lack of sleep, can barely stand. In fact, he passes out just as the chopper arrives, dashing Klinger's hopes of getting out of the Army and going back stateside!
As usual Mash gets his facts mixed up-martinson claims to be an Associate Professor of Art History...Then claims to have been attending ROTC when the Korean War broke out..except ROTC is only available to college students!
Likewise an early mash with Hawkeyes and trapper John had a disgruntled lt (John Ritter) who tried to take major burns hostage in a shower!
