Lieutenant Chivers was a British officer who made a one time appearance in the Season 4 episode of M*A*S*H titled "Hey Doc". The part of the Lieutenant was played by Ted Hamilton.

About Lieutenant Chivers[]

The 4077th MASH is under attack by a sniper and a British patrol led by Lieutenant Chivers is sent to help. Chivers meets Hawkeye and B.J. in the mess tent and asks for a medical favor. After going to the hospital building, Chivers tells them that British superiors placed great importance on foot care and an officer who developed an ingrown toenail could be punished or denied promotion. The two doctors agree to treat the condition and promise that it would not enter Chivers' medical records in exchange for two bottles of high-end scotch.

A few days later, Chivers returns to the MASH in a jeep and hands two bottles of 8-year old scotch to Hawkeye and B.J. However they do not have long to enjoy the booty. Obviously Chivers and his patrol never found the sniper because just as Hawkeye and B.J. are walking back to their quarters with the scotch, a series of accurate sniper shots destroy both bottles.

Research notes[]

Chivers introduces himself as coming from the 29th Brigade, which is accurate as the 29th Independent Infantry Brigade was a British brigade under I Corps. So it is plausible that he and his men would be sent to assist the 4077th MASH.

From the regimental shoulder title, it can be seen that he is from the York and Lancaster Regiment. His formation badge in the design of a "Y" shows that he is from the 5th Infantry Division, which is the correct parent formation for the York and Lancaster Regiment.

Chivers' cap badge is also a mystery. It is not the cap badge of the York and Lancaster Regiment, nor is it the cap badge of any regiment that was part of the 29th Brigade. As of now the cap badge is unidentified.

Chivers 2-hey doc

Another view of Chivers. The regimental shoulder title of the York and Lancaster Regiment can be seen. The "Y" is the formation badge of the 5th British Infantry Division.
