About Dr. Syn PaikEdit
Syn Paik is a surgeon with the North Korean Army (The Korean People's Army). He speaks good English, having attended medical school at the University of Chicago and interning at Cooks County Hospital.
At the beginning of the episode, Syn Paik arrives with a group of wounded North Koreans at the 4077th after their battalion aid station is overrun by UN troops. While in the ambulance bus, he offers inputs on the various patients on board. Frank ignores him, but B.J. and Hawkeye agree with his views and go along with his suggestions on triage.
Later, Hawkeye and B.J. take a liking to him, finding him friendly and a thorough professional on medical matters. When he expresses a wish that they could all work together, B.J. and Hawkeye hatch a plot to get him into the 4077th disguised as a US Army surgeon Captain Cho-wan Ho. In surgery, Syn Paik impresses Potter but almost blows his cover by doing things a little too differently. Obviously the scheme could not last for too long and due partly to Margaret's suspicions, he is soon exposed and Potter is obliged to send him away as a P.O.W. For fuller details, see the episode summary at the article for the episode "The Korean Surgeon".
As Syn Paik is leaving, he comes to say goodbye to B.J., Hawkeye and Radar. He tells them to cheer up because the war cannot last forever. Encouraged by his optimismn, Hawkeye suggests that perhaps they could get together after the war, for a few beers. Or even "share some rice wine", Syn Paik counters. Radar thinks that is a good idea and may be Syn Paik could also recommend a few good Chinese restaurants. Syn Paik replies that he knows one or two but unfortunately they are all in Chicago!
