About Chim SaEdit

Chim Sa is the Korean wife of an American soldier Corporal Walter R. Jacobson. She comes to the 4077th with her baby Sang Min looking for a rabbi but at first no one understands what she is trying to say. She first approaches Frank and Margaret but Frank ignores her. Hawkeye and Trapper also do not understand who she is looking for at first, but when she produces a letter from her husband, all is made clear. Her husband is busy at the front, and being Jewish, is requesting a bris ceremony for his son.

Hawkeye and Trapper agree to do the ceremony with the help of Father Mulcahy. Radar manages to find a rabbi on board the USS Essex who relays instructions for the ritual, step by step, by radio through Radar to Father Mulcahy. Unfortunately the radio signal is lost part way through the ceremony and Father Mulcahy does not know how to conclude it. At this point Chim Sa surprises everyone by completing the necessary words in Hebrew!

During the bris party laid on in the mess tent after the ceremony, Father Mulcahy reflects on the experience. He tells the others that watching Chim Sa with her child, she was like the happiest person he had seen in his life. He had been struggling with the idea that his sister might want to leave her vocation as a nun and get married. But now that he sees how happy Chim Sa is, he feels his sister deserves a chance at that as well.
