The 4077th MASH is a typical U.S. Army Mobile Army Surgical Hospital during the Korean War. Based on a concept that evolved soon after the Second World War, these units are designed to be highly mobile, with its own transportation to allow them to keep up with advancing troops or "bug out" in the face of oncoming enemy threats. They therefore operated mainly out of tents or used whatever temporary buildings they could find.

For most of the TV series, the 4077th MASH was located near the Korean town of Uijeongbu. For filming, an external film set was built at the Fox Ranch (now the Malibu Creek State Park). Internal shots and some externals were shot at Stage 9 in the 20th Century Fox Studios.

The picture below shows a map of the 4077th MASH camp layout based on the set at the Fox Ranch. The numbers refer to specific structures as detailed below. Note that this layout differs from the aerial view seen in the opening sequence. This scene was the layout as seen during the MASH movie. The TV series layout had fewer structures.

4077
  • (1) The major feature in the camp compound was the hospital building, which, in the case of the 4077th, was a T-shaped wooden structure with a metal roof. At the end of one arm of the "T" (1a) is the entrance to the pre-op ward, leading to the scrub room and X-Ray room and then to the O.R.. At the end of another arm of the "T" at (1b), perpendicular is the entrance to the post-op ward. At junction of these two arms at (1c) is the entrance to the headquarters, which comprises the anteroom occupied by Radar and later Klinger with a door leading to the commander's office. Also in the hospital building are the pharmacy and lab although it is not clear where these are.
  • (2) the commander's tent
  • (4) the shower tent
  • (8) (9) (10) are accomodation tents, usually under a large camouflage net. From right to left, these are normally the Chaplain's tent, the head nurse's tent and then the nurse's tent. Although there is a VIP tent in this area as well. Normally only 3 tents are to be seen but obviously there had to be many more to accomodate the number of people in the camp. For filming purposes these 3 are repurposed as necessary.
  • (11) the mess tent, which probably inclides the kitchen
  • (15a) supply tent
  • (15b) supply nissen hut
  • (16) Sophie's corral
  • (18) MASH 4077 sign and barrier
  • (19) Rosie's Bar - not strictly part of the camp but features heavily in camp life.
  • (20) unknown shack - this shack at the entrance is definitely present but its purpose is not known.
  • (21) unknown shack - this shack beyond the nissen hut on the road out of the camp but its purpose is unknown.
  • helicopter pad - the camp had two, an upper chopper pad which is more frequently used, and a lower pad next to the supply tent.
  • motor pool

Occasionally, a dental clinic and an optometrist facility can be seen but it is assumed that these are itinerant services provided by specialists who traveled from unit to unit wherever they are needed. There is also a library but its location is not known.
